Goulburn MP and Minister The Hon. Pru Goward has announced that the historic Berrima Gaol is set to reopen in September after new painting and plumbing works currently underway are completed.

The Goal is planned to accommodate up to 75 male minimum-security prisoners. The reopening is part of a long-time infrastructure plan to increase gaol capacity in NSW by 1100 new beds in response to a rising prison population.

Berrima Gaol housed 75 female prisoners before it was closed in October 2011.

The Berrima Residents Association welcomes the decision to reopen the Gaol  and expects to again work cooperatively with the prison authorities for the benefit of the village and the wider community in the Southern Highlands.
