With a history spanning 176 years, one of Australia’s most historic gaols opens its doors to the public on Australia Day in 2015.
Over the Australia Day Weekend, Berrima Gaol will open for self-guided tours, a Saturday night Bush Dance, and an opera on the Sunday evening.
Few people have ever seen what lays beyond the forbidding gate and high sandstone walls but here’s a recent video.

Operational between 1839 and 2011, at the time of its closure, Berrima’s gaol was the oldest Australian correctional facility in operation.
Next Australia Day Long Weekend, the Rotary Club of Berrima District has obtained permission to open the gaol, giving unprecedented access to residents and tourists.
